Questa breve poesia fu scritta da Ungaretti a Santa Maria la Longa il 26 gennaio 1917.Anzi, la prima versione in originale, la quale Ungaretti aveva spedito ai suoi amici Papini e Soffici su cartoline postali, era questa:

This short poem was written by Ungaretti in Santa Maria la Longa January 26, 1917.Indeed, the first in the original version, which Ungaretti had sent to his friends Papini and Soffici on postcards, was this: 

 “M’illumino d’immenso con un breve  moto di sguardi”

Siamo in guerra, siamo in trincea e siamo verso Trieste in una mattina di sole; all’improvviso i soldati ed anche Ungaretti vedono la distesa infinita del mare.E s’illuminano “d’immenso”.Il titolo in alcune pubblicazioni precedenti aveva quello di “Cielo e Mare”, poi cambiato in “Mattina”
